Obstacles to Productivity

Success in any business venture requires an efficient use of resources, a well-informed flexibility and a lean, adaptable operating strategy. Profitability occurs at the intersection of a fine-tuned business model and the innumerable variables a mercurial marketplace throws at your business.

As with any intersection, collisions can also occur in the face of unexpected obstacles. Learning to overcome these obstacles to productivity and profitability will make all the difference.

A comprehensive marketing plan which develops a solution well before the obstacle is encountered can ensure a successful navigation through even the most challenging intersections.

Let’s consider some of the Obstacles to Productivity and how a well-informed, flexible and efficient marketing plan can offer the solution.

1. Lack of a strategic plan

Strategy requires seeing the big picture, envisioning the desired result and orchestrating all the variables to achieve your business goals. Formulating a strategic plan means moving your decision-making process away from reactivity and into the command center of proactivity.

The challenge is often in getting above the clouds, out of the weeds and seeing your business and all of its moving parts with fresh eyes. Nonetheless, formulating an overarching, strategic plan which takes into account all aspects of your business from operations, through marketing, to sales is essential to removing obstacles. Without a sound plan, obstacles multiply needlessly.

2. Failure to optimize your resources

A strategic plan views and orders your business, aligning everything you do with your end goal. When viewed in the light of your end goal and mobilized according to your strategic plan, resources are much more likely to be deployed efficiently.

Efficiency is only half the challenge. To effectively remove this obstacle to your productivity, more than efficiency is required: optimization is also necessary.

Avoiding waste is essential, but having the right resource, trained and fine-tuned, in the right place at the right time is the very definition of optimization. Again, this is accomplished by aligning these resources to your comprehensive plan.

Furthermore, optimizing your resources in support of your strategy also eliminates another oft-experienced obstacle to productivity, namely, ineffective implementation.

3. Failure to analyze the data

How do we know if our strategic plan and the use of our resources is being effective or not? The most obvious answer is to simply look at profitability. However, there is a lag inherent in this approach. Often, productivity is not clear for 30 days or more after the end of a reporting period.

We need a more immediate source of data if we are to remain flexible and responsive to real-time market forces; and we need to avoid the obstacle of failing to analyze the data effectively.

There is no shortage of data out there: Google Analytics, Social Media Analytics, Point of Sale Reporting, etc. The challenge is to coordinate the intersecting datasets from these sources, in addition to the data unique to each source, and glean from it only what is actionable and impactful; measuring it all by the guidelines set out in our strategic plan.

4. Ineffective use of digital resources

This leads us to our final obstacle to productivity. Ineffective use of the digital tools and resources can slow, trip-up and cause your business to fumble.

Whether it’s a failure to have the right, targeted software tools; an ineffective use of social media marketing; or holding on to a stale website and suffering the effects of dismal SEO; utilizing your digital assets poorly is one of the biggest obstacles to productivity.

Keeping up with trends in software development, social media and Internet marketing is a daunting task. However, it’s essential to remain on the cutting edge of technology, knowing that your competition most likely is doing the same.
